First Grade Curriculum – What to Expect

Are you eager to find out about early years curriculum? The chances are either your kid is going to enter first grade this autumn or maybe the kid entering first grade is actually you. Just kidding! Entering first grade involves a fair amount of intense emotions for a kid. That is a reason why the first grade curriculum should be presented by parents to a child in such a manner that can arouse the learning interest of the child. In this way the child will perceive the school as something challenging and interesting and so will be able to take advantage of a smooth start.

A smooth start we have taken here also and now it would be the time to explore a little bit more about the first grade curriculum. The first grade curriculum usually consists of: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and the Arts. These are the five courses that your kid is going to study in the first grade. Which one do you think will be your kid’s favorite? It might be an easy answer for you or maybe it is something that remains to be discovered. Either way we will provide some brief information for every course contained in the first grade curriculum. Let’s start with language arts.

The language arts course addresses aspects related to listening, speaking, reading and writing. First grade children expands their vocabularies, start to examine the elements of a story, differentiate single and plural forms of nouns and memorize and spell correctly a fair amount of words (between 130-150 words).

At math, another first grade curriculum course, the children will learn to count up to 100, will study addition and subtraction, will learn how to use measurement tools, how to tell time and will learn the basic geometrical shapes.

The social studies course will give children some basic knowledge on geography. For instance, they will learn to locate the oceans and the continents on a map or a globe. Apart from geography, they will get some understanding on cultures and will participate in decision making groups. The first grade curriculum looks pretty interesting so far and we did not finish yet.

Another first grade curriculum course is science. Here, the children will explore the human senses, will conduct some simple experiments and examine the life cycle of living things.

The last course that you will find in the first grade curriculum is arts. It will help kids have a better understanding of primary colors and color mixing. It will also teach children how to use hand percussion instruments and last but not least the arts course also includes physical education.

That would be it about the first grade curriculum in this article and in the hope of giving you handy information we would like to wish the best of luck for you and your kid. http://www.samplecurriculum.com/ is a great website which provides more info about this subject.
